This week’s App Smart column highlights a few good book apps that might prompt your children to spend more time reading this summer.
For children who are just learning to read, though, The Going to Bed Book for iPad ($2) is a hands-down winner.
More from Bob Tedeschi, the App Smart columnist.

The app is the interactive version of Sandra Boynton’s popular book, which follows a boatful of animals as they engage in their bedtime rituals.
It is a sweetly simple tale, and the interactive features of the app enhance the experience significantly. A gentle piano melody plays in the background, and the pop-up elements include entertaining but not over-the-top sound effects.
My favorite page is one with a faucet for hot, running water. When the water runs for a few seconds, a layer of steam coats the screen, and users can draw on it as they would a steamy mirror or window after a shower.
Readers can silence the narrator’s perfect-for-bedtime voice, or they can tap on a word for the pronunciation.
If my children were younger, I could easily see this app being part of our own bedtime ritual.
