(B&N) this week unveiled an all-new Nook e-book reader, which is more advanced, smaller, and longer lasting than the popular first-generation e-book reader.

The Wi-Fi device, which costs $139, has a 6-inch touch screen e-ink display and a two-month-long battery life. The price point is the same as the older model it replaces.

B&N will begin selling the device on June 10 in stores and online. Customers wishing to pre-order may do so by visiting nook.com.

The Nook, which is a best-seller at B&N, competes directly with Amazon.com’s Kindle e-reader. Nook is powered by Google Android 2.1 and has 2 gigabytes of onboard memory for storing books.

At a launch event at the B&N store in Union Square in New York, B&N CEO William Lynch was not shy about comparing the new Nook to its closest rival, the Kindle.

“The Kindle 3 has 38 buttons, 37 more than the all-new Nook. Anyone who has mobile devices with lots of buttons and nav bars knows that means a lot of scrolling and a lot of interface,” Lynch said at the event.

With the launch, B&N decreased the price of the first Nook to $119 for the Wi-Fi version and $169 for the 3G version.
